29 Aug / Durban Port Delays

Following some substantial delays in Durban Port, & the severe negative impact on business, EARTH Logistics have been in contact with the National Ports Authorities, and can confirm that high winds are the main cause of these delays – impacting some piers more than others as a result of their position in relation to the prevailing winds. We have requested that the Authority provide its clients with relevant updates on a more regular basis, which has been well received – we await our first update.

An overview of the reasons for the port delays is as follows:

  • Bad weather
    • Recent snow resulting in the closure of roads between JHB and DUR has caused a build up of cargo in the port
  • Damages caused by bad weather
    • Some gantry cranes have been damaged to the extent that they require extensive repairs – further slowing the offloading processes in the port
  • General congestion of the Durban Harbour
  • Maintenance work has some piers out of operation
  • Vessels stand outside the port for extended periods for berthing opportunities
